The present study aimed to examine the relationship between emotion dysregulation and food addiction, with particular attention to the mediating role of emotional eating and the moderating roles of perceived stress and body mass index in the relevant pathways. Self-affliction was also included as a related psychological variable. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted, and data were collected through an online platform. A total of 306 valid participants were included in the analysis. The measures used in this study included the Emotional Eating subscale of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ-EE), the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), the Self-exhausted Scale—Revised version (SES), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, and the PROCESS macro was employed to test the mediation and moderation effects.
The results indicated that emotional eating partially mediated the relationship between emotion dysregulation and food addiction, suggesting that emotional eating may serve as an important behavioral pathway through which emotion dysregulation is associated with food addiction. In contrast, after controlling for emotion dysregulation, the indirect effect of self-affliction on food addiction through emotional eating was not significant, suggesting that its unique contribution may be limited after accounting for emotion dysregulation. Regarding the moderation effects, perceived stress significantly moderated the association between emotional eating and food addiction, such that the relationship was stronger under higher levels of perceived stress. Body mass index also moderated specific pathways, particularly the associations between self-affliction and emotional eating, and between emotional eating and food addiction. In addition, logistic regression analysis showed that women were more likely than men to be classified into the food addiction group.
Overall, the findings support the role of emotional eating as an important behavioral mechanism linking emotion dysregulation to food addiction, and further suggest that perceived stress and body mass index may shape this process. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying food addiction and provide implications for future research and practical applications.
