This study aims to understand the formation of body image among masculine lesbians by exploring how gender expression identity, body practices, others’ gazes, social expectations, and intimate and sexual experiences intersect and shape their understandings, feelings, evaluations, emotional responses, and practices concerning their bodies, as well as the bodily positions they experience under others’ gazes and within intimate relationships. A qualitative research approach was adopted. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, and the interview data of three masculine lesbians were included as the formal analytical texts. The data were analyzed using the categorical-content mode of narrative analysis.
The findings indicate that body image among masculine lesbians is not merely a matter of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with appearance, body shape, or specific body parts. Rather, it is closely intertwined with gender expression identity, self-identity, and social positioning. Throughout their developmental processes, the three participants gradually became aware of the gap between their bodies and mainstream expectations of femininity through clothing, hairstyles, bodily development, family norms, school experiences, and responses from others. Through practices such as short hair, gender-neutral clothing, chest binding, bodily posture adjustment, and the establishment of bodily boundaries, they attempted to make their bodies feel closer to their own experiences and gender expression. In addition, others’ gazes, social expectations, and classification systems within lesbian communities also participated in the formation of their body image, leading masculine lesbians to continually negotiate the relationship between their bodies and selves through experiences of being seen, misrecognized, questioned, or affirmed. Furthermore, intimate relationships and sexual experiences served as important sites for the transformation of body image. Whether the body was respected, touched, desired, and understood could influence participants’ acceptance and reinterpretation of their bodies.
Overall, this study suggests that body image among masculine lesbians is a dynamic process that gradually develops, is continuously negotiated, and may transform throughout the life course. The body is not only a site that carries norms and pressures, but also an important medium through which masculine lesbians practice gender expression, negotiate relationships, and situate the self. The findings provide a more nuanced understanding of masculine lesbians’ bodily experiences and may contribute to counseling practice, gender education, and gender-inclusive services.
