Life stories are not finished texts; rather, they are interactively produced dimensions of everyday life. Taking life stories as dynamic communicative narrative practices as its central concern, this study argues that, as narrative practice unfolds, the dynamic, interactive, and contextual qualities of life stories gradually come into view. In this process, life stories do not remain fixed representations of past experience; instead, they are continuously shaped, revised, and reinterpreted through situated interaction. They should therefore be understood as a form of narrative practice that departs from conventional views of life stories as stable textual products, revealing instead their role as dynamic communicative processes through which meaning is generated and shared.
Taking narrative hermeneutics as its main methodological stance and narrative inquiry as its primary research method, this study investigates the processes and lived experiences of older adults’ narrative practices through participant observation and narrative interviews. By examining these narrative materials, the study identifies shared patterns and common features in older adults’ life stories, and further interprets the process of “re-memory and re-telling” as it unfolds in everyday interaction. In this way, the study seeks to understand how life stories are continually shaped through narrative practice, and how their meanings are produced, negotiated, and sustained over time.
Through the telling of life stories, local communal experiences, practical attitudes toward life, and affective evaluations are simultaneously carried forward, allowing ordinary wisdom to be gradually transformed into socially shared collective memory. Accordingly, this study further conceptualizes life stories as a dynamic ontology of narrative practice, whose meaning emerges progressively through ongoing narrative interaction between narrators and listeners within specific temporal, spatial, relational, and sociocultural contexts.
