Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an important driver of innovation across various fields, and libraries have begun exploring the potential of Artificial Intelligence Librarians (AI Librarians) to enhance information services, learning support, and user engagement. However, AI Librarian services have not yet been officially implemented in public libraries in Taiwan, and existing studies have primarily focused on the adoption of generative AI tools rather than AI Librarians. Little attention has been given to the self-efficacy, trust formation, and adoption intention of Active Aging Adults in this emerging context. Therefore, this study adopted Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to examine the relationships among observational learning, outcome expectations, self-efficacy, environmental support, trust propensity, and adoption intention.
A mixed-methods approach was employed. The quantitative study was conducted at the Senior Learning Centers of the Taipei Public Library. Because AI Librarian services are not yet available, a simulated interaction environment was developed in which participants completed five representative tasks before completing the questionnaire. A total of 196 questionnaires were collected, with 181 valid responses retained for analysis. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Active Aging Adults to further explore their user experiences and trust formation. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to analyze the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used to interpret the qualitative findings.
The results indicate that observational learning and outcome expectations positively influence self-efficacy. Self-efficacy and environmental support significantly enhance trust propensity, which in turn positively affects adoption intention. Interview findings further reveal that Active Aging Adults recognize the value of AI Librarians in information retrieval, learning assistance, and everyday applications. Nevertheless, when seeking information related to health, legal, or financial issues, they tend to verify AI-generated responses through librarians, professionals, or other reliable information sources. Overall, the findings support the applicability of Social Cognitive Theory in explaining the psychological processes underlying the use of AI Librarians by Active Aging Adults. The study contributes to the literature on AI Librarian services and provides practical implications for public libraries in planning AI-enabled services, promoting digital learning for Active Aging Adults, and advancing smart library development.
