This study aimed to examine the association between trait gratitude and emotion regulation strategies among individuals in emerging adulthood, and further investigate the mediating role of feeling needed and useful. In addition, differences across biological sex were explored. Participants were individuals aged 19 to 25 in emerging adulthood, and data were collected through a questionnaire survey. The instruments included the Gratitude Questionnaire-Six Item Form (GQ-6), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ), and the Feeling Needed and Useful Scale. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, regression analysis, PROCESS mediation analysis, and independent-samples t tests.
The findings were as follows: (1) trait gratitude was positively correlated with cognitive reappraisal, but was not significantly correlated with expressive suppression; (2) trait gratitude significantly and positively predicted cognitive reappraisal, but did not significantly predict expressive suppression; (3) feeling needed and useful partially mediated the relationship between trait gratitude and cognitive reappraisal, whereas no significant mediating effect was found between trait gratitude and expressive suppression; and (4) significant sex differences were found in feeling needed and useful, with males scoring significantly higher than females; however, no significant sex differences were found in trait gratitude or emotion regulation strategies.
The results suggest that trait gratitude may facilitate the use of more adaptive emotion regulation strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal, among individuals in emerging adulthood. In addition, feeling needed and useful in interpersonal relationships may serve as an important psychological mechanism linking trait gratitude and cognitive reappraisal. The findings may provide implications for future research and practical applications.
