Athusser）認為：從三零年代起，馬克思早年的作品，成為對馬克思主義決鬪中的「戰馬」，這個比喻就東歐而言，實非過當之論。西方自由世界對馬克思主義的研究，往往局限於恩格斯的傳統，多留心於列寧對馬克思主義的修正，至於，馬克思本身的理論卻沒有重新加以檢視和批判，這種情況到「手稿」 出版後亦有顯著的轉變，研究「青年馬克思」蔚成風尚，可謂風靡一時，佛洛姆（E . Fromm）名之為「馬克思理論的復興」。
