This study examines the impact of board characteristics on corporate environmental performance and further investigates whether board education moderates this relationship. Using a sample of Taiwanese listed and over-the-counter companies from 2016 to 2024, the final sample includes 12,917 firm-year observations.
The empirical results show that board size, independent directors, and board education are positively associated with corporate environmental performance. This suggests that larger boards and more independent boards may improve environmental performance through external resources, professional knowledge, and monitoring functions. In addition, boards with higher educational levels may be better able to understand environmental issues and sustainability strategies. Regarding the moderating effect, board education does not significantly strengthen the relationship between board size and environmental performance, but it significantly enhances the positive effect of independent directors on environmental performance. Overall, this study suggests that firms should not only focus on board structure, but also consider the educational background and knowledge capabilities of board members when improving environmental performance.
