伯林為了保護個人選擇的權利範圍，以及人在此方面的自由與權威性，而採取一種被動與消極的方式處理個人對於群體的認同與互動；試圖壓抑群體對於個人自由與選擇權的影響，然而講求社群認同的多元文化論則認為對於個人對群體認同的忽略反而會使得個人在社會上的權利在實質上受損，本文旨在討論伯林在處理人與群體的問題時是否真的將遭遇到以上的問題。
