Effective quark-quark interaction is studied in the framework of paraquark shell model of baryons. The totally symmetric three-quark SU(3) ×SU(2)×O(3) wave functions are taken as basis to calculate the matrix elements of the mass operator in terms of one-body operators and two-body potential integrals. Without assuming explicit expressions for the two-body potentials, mass relations for the [56, 0+] supermultiplet are obtained, which are in excellent agreement with experiment. For the [70, 1-] supermultiplet, no mass formula can be derived. From a physical argument, plausible phenomenological interaction potentials are proposed. The mass matrix elements are re-expressed in terms of 10 reduced radial potential integrals and 4 one-body parameters. And excellent least-squares fit to the observed mass spectra of both [56,0+] and [70,1-] supermultiplets within 7.5 MeV is obtained. The relative contributions of each type of potentials are disscussed. It is found that in general the SU(3)-symmetric and SU(3)-breaking forces are of equal importance to the contribution of mass splitting. The static and decay properties of the baryonic resonances are also determined with results in good agreement with the experimental observations.
