一、論文目的：1. 了解集團成立總管理處的動機類型，2. 建立一個可用來分析總管理處結構的模式， 3. 了解集團特性對總管理的角色定位類型，業務重點與業務執行方式之影響。
二、研究方法：以台塑、羽田與禾豐等三個不同類型之集團為個案撰寫對象，並進行探索式研究。另在命題推論的過程中為了使命題的實用度得以提昇，另外又加上東帝士、台電等數家集團之資料以利命題推縯。
三、研究結論：
(一)分子企業家數、分子企業間之關聯程度、主要股東間的關聯程度、專業經理人的比例、集團特定業務的特性與集團管理哲學等集團特性變數皆會影響企業集團對三種總管理處可能之角色類型的需求。
(二)分子企業間的關聯程度，產業環境的穩定度，分子企業之家數與規模，服務提供的歷史與績效與集團之管理哲學等集團特性會影響總管理處的業務執行方式。
(三)當各產品群之群內的關聯程度有差異，或各產品群之產業穩定程度有差異，或有重點產品群存在，則集團中各產品群的管理機制會有差異。
(四)當一多角化的集團。其各產品群之群內關聯度相當高時，則可考慮採用二層式的總管理處組織。
