This research examines the environmental and cultural implications of tourism development on Pongso no Tao by analyzing how different generations of Tao people, acting as cultural brokers, position and enact cultural knowledge within the tourism industry. Adopting a historical perspective, generational difference is understood not as a matter of age but as the outcome of distinct sociohistorical conditions shaped by environmental change, educational experience, and economic constraints. These conditions shape guiding practices as well as relationships to land, community, and cultural authority.

The findings indicate a profound generational fracture in the practice of cultural mediation despite shared childhood experiences on Pongso no Tao. Cultural brokers who returned during the early phase of tourism development ground their guiding practices in long-term dwelling within the community and sustained interaction with the environment. Their narratives integrate oral histories and Tao knowledge directly into spatial interpretation. In contrast, contemporary returnees were socialized within Han-dominated educational and social institutions from early life and now conduct guiding on an island already transformed by capitalist infrastructure. Under pressures for efficiency and visitor expectations, interpretive practices tend to become standardized, reflecting a broader structural displacement of Indigenous epistemologies. Rather than representing simple cultural loss, tourism guiding emerges as a contested field of negotiation. Within this context, the Flying Fish Summoning Ritual Mivanwa functions as a key arena of practice. Through shared labor and ritual participation, returning Tao gradually reposition themselves within the community and relearn to interpret culture from a Tao perspective.
