Geographical and temporal distance often shape how people perceive events, sustain attention, and translate concern into action. Immersive journalism, which integrates 3D and interactive technologies to let audiences experience news events from a protagonist’s first-person perspective, is expected to narrow the psychological gap between the public and the news. Yet empirical findings remain inconclusive regarding its psychological mechanisms and downstream behavioral effects, particularly how temporal distance influences understanding and engagement with distant suffering. This study argues that immersive journalism can enhance comprehension of distant suffering and foster news engagement, likely by boosting narrative engagement, place illusion, and embodiment, and it identifies perceived temporal distance during the experience as a pivotal psychological mechanism.
Using a single-factor between-subjects design, participants (N = 73) experienced an immersive news piece via different devices and were then compared on their understanding of distant suffering and their news engagement. Results show that narrative engagement and place illusion effectively shortened perceived temporal distance. Moreover, participants with relevant prior knowledge or experience developed a stronger sense of connectedness to distant suffering, and this effect was mediated by place illusion and temporal distance.
