邊界，在現代經常被預設為主權國家統轄所及之處。然而在傳統中國，邊界、邊境與邊疆，並未被視為固定、絕對且不可撼動的概念，相對地，書寫者往往對邊界存在不同見解。那麼在清帝國尚未存在明晰邊界的情況下，疆域之於政權與個人的意義又是如何，便是值得探問的議題。
本文旨在探討前現代中國如何思量疆域、建構疆界，其疆域觀又如何轉向現代領土觀。過往研究已詳盡探討前現代中國疆域與邊界的變動性，本文則更關注於「變動性」如何被形塑，流動的疆域又如何轉化為固著的領土。
本文以中國西南滇緬地區的邊界建構為例。與既有著重於政權邊疆控制力的政治史視角相異，本文則從「知識建構」切入，意味著關注不同文本的書寫者（如地方志與官書的編纂者、地方官員、文人等）為何、如何書寫邊疆知識，邊疆知識書寫又如何影響時人對疆域的認識。本文所涉及的史料包括朝廷纂輯文獻、地方志、時人文集、英國地理測繪報告、地圖與中英檔案，透過比對、分析不同類型的史料，以此理解疆界知識的傳遞、詮釋與轉型脈絡。
本文將依循知識的生產、流通與轉化三個層次說明。首先，本文剖析清代文獻的知識運作機制，對比「域內」沿革敘事的積極重構與「域外」緬甸認知的停滯沿襲，指出邊疆知識的傳遞與汰選實受制於王朝的政治動機；其次，本文進而探討滇緬疆界如何成為容許多元甚至矛盾詮釋的模糊地帶；最後，以清末滇緬勘界與議約為例，本文將視角從外交交涉轉向知識體系的碰撞，分析清代知識人如何重新詮釋既定的邊域書寫，探討從「變動疆域」至「明確領土」知識典範重構的過程。
本文指出，前現代中國疆界的變動性，與傳統知識運作的方式密切相關。書寫者藉由沿襲、傳鈔與再詮釋既定的疆界知識，造就多元不一的解釋，進而形成分歧的地理想像。現代的邊界建構，亦脫胎自傳統的疆界解釋，而將領土主權概念熔鑄於既有的疆界想像之內。無論是前現代世界或是現代世界，邊界的建構皆不具備客觀而中立的性質。惟兩者所遵循的知識架構不同：前現代疆域觀容許不同的地理想像，而現代的領土觀則僅允許單一的權威論述。然而，現代領土觀並非全然取代傳統疆域觀，而是以傳統疆域觀的詮釋方法所建構，呈現斷裂與延續共存的樣貌。

Nowadays, borders are frequently presumed to be the farthest extent of a sovereign state’s jurisdiction. However, in Imperial China, borders, borderlands, and frontiers were not conceived as fixed, absolute, or immutable concepts; instead, writers often held divergent perspectives on them. Therefore, in the absence of clearly defined boundaries during the Qing Empire, the significance of territorial space for both the state and the individual merits further investigation.
This thesis explores how pre-modern China conceptualized spatial domains and constructed boundaries, and how this traditional spatial paradigm transitioned into the modern concept of territory. While previous studies have extensively examined the fluidity of territory and borders in the pre-modern era, this research focuses specifically on how this “fluidity” was shaped, and how shifting domains were ultimately transformed into fixed territories.
Using the border construction of the Yunnan-Burma region in southwestern China as a case study, this thesis departs from traditional political history perspectives that emphasize state control over borderlands. Instead, it adopts the lens of knowledge construction. This approach investigates why and how various text producers—including compilers of local gazetteers and official chronicles, local bureaucrats, and literati—actively constructed frontier knowledge, and how the production, circulation, and transformation of such knowledge shaped contemporary spatial cognition. Utilizing primary sources such as official state documents, local gazetteers, literati anthologies, British geographic survey reports, maps, and archival records, this study cross-examines diverse materials to elucidate the transmission, interpretation, and transformative trajectory of border knowledge.
The argument unfolds across three dimensions of knowledge: production, circulation, and transformation. First, the thesis dissects the mechanisms of making knowledge in Qing texts, contrasting the active reconstruction of “inner domain” evolutionary narratives with the stagnant, inherited perceptions of the “outer domain” (Burma). It reveals that the transmission and filtration of frontier knowledge were fundamentally dictated by the dynasty’s political motives. Building upon this textual tradition, the study then investigates how the Yunnan-Burma frontier emerged as an ambiguous zone accommodating pluralistic, even contradictory, interpretations. Finally, examining the late-Qing Yunnan-Burma border demarcation and treaty negotiations, this thesis shifts the analytical focus from traditional diplomatic history to the collision of epistemic systems. It analyzes the conceptual clashes that occurred when China’s elastic geographical discourse confronted the modern system of international law (represented by Britain), and explores how Qing intellectuals reinterpreted established border writings to reconstruct the spatial paradigm, from “fluid domains” to “defined territories.”
Ultimately, this thesis argues that the fluidity of pre-modern Chinese borders was inextricably linked to traditional modes of knowledge production. Through the repetition, transcription, and reinterpretation of established spatial knowledge, writers generated a multiplicity of explanations, thereby fostering divergent geographic imaginaries. The modern construction of boundaries likewise evolved from these traditional spatial interpretations, integrating the concept of territorial sovereignty into existing geographic imaginaries. Neither in the pre-modern nor the modern world is the construction of borders an objective or neutral process. The distinction lies in their underlying epistemic frameworks: the pre-modern spatial paradigm accommodated diverse geographic imaginaries, whereas the modern concept of territory permits only a singular, authoritative discourse. Yet the latter did not simply replace the former; rather, the modern territorial discourse was itself constructed through the same interpretive methods inherited from the traditional spatial paradigm, revealing continuity as much as rupture.
