As repositories for preserving history and culture, national museums bear the imagination and discourse of a nation, while simultaneously serving as a manifestation and epitome of community values. Prior to its independence in 1994, the Republic of Palau was governed by successive regimes, including Spain, Germany, Japan, and the United States. In addition to undergoing rapid social changes, the nation lost portions of its land, history, and memory during World War II. Established in the post-WWII era, the Belau National Museum plays a pivotal role in sustaining Palauan memory and traditional culture. Beyond exhibiting history and culture, the museum reclaims and translates Palauan local ecological knowledge through contemporary practices such as fieldwork, educational outreach, and international cooperation. Focusing on the Belau National Museum and adopting a multispecies ethnographic approach, this study explores how the museum constructs a uniquely Palauan ecological knowledge through the research and preservation of local ecological insights, under the influence of Palauan cultural and ecological perspectives.
By examining the institution’s history and contemporary practices, this study finds that the Belau National Museum does not merely inherit the colonial legacy of foreign museum systems. Instead, within a hybrid historical context, it has formed a cultural institution with Palauan subjectivity through local selection and transformation. The museum employs Western scientific education, specimen preparation, and international research collaborations, enabling Palauan botanical and ecological knowledge to be preserved, read, and exchanged globally. Concurrently, its knowledge production and conservation practices remain deeply influenced by community trust, local needs, and the Palauan worldview. The “ecology” constructed by the Belau National Museum is neither static knowledge nor a mere landscape; rather, it is a relational network co-constituted by land, community, daily life, and international cooperation.
The museum’s “construction of ecological knowledge” discussed in this study goes beyond the mere preservation and exhibition of natural species. It forms a practice of preserving and sustaining Palauan ecology across the natural environment, knowledge translation, and social relations, thereby demonstrating the local subjectivity of Palauan society within its hybrid historical circumstances. The “Palauan locality” of the museum does not lie in the exclusion of foreign systems or the pursuit of cultural purity, but rather in its capacity to transform foreign institutions, scientific methods, and preservation techniques into tools that serve the Palauan community, perpetuate local knowledge, and face the future. Through the museum’s ecological preservation and multispecies relationships, this paper reveals that the Belau National Museum is not merely a site for preserving the past, but a crucial arena for observing how Palauan social networks, cultural ethics, ecological values, and local subjectivity continuously emerge and evolve.
