With the rapid advancement of digital technology, the ubiquity of smart mobile devices, and the rise of Generative AI, the barrier to learning photography has been significantly lowered, allowing photography to gradually integrate into the daily lives of the public and become a highly representative leisure activity. Based on serious leisure perspectives, this study aims to explore the motivations behind the development of amateur photographers' hobbies, and analyze their information behaviors in various photographic practice contexts, including their information needs, information seeking, filtering, problems, solutions, and the influence of serious leisure on their information behaviors.
This study employed the in-depth interview method. An interview outline was designed based on the six serious leisure characteristics and various dimensions of information behavior, such as context, needs, seeking, sources, filtering, and problems. A total of 16 amateur photographers in Taiwan were interviewed.
The research findings indicate that: (1) A complex interplay of factors drives amateur photographers to develop their serious leisure hobby, which also defines the themes and purposes of their ongoing photographic practices. (2) Photographic practice contexts drive photographers' information needs in relation to their "Way of Life" and "Mastery of Life." (3) Amateur photographers choose their information-seeking channels based on the specific characteristics of their needs, and develop screening mechanisms to evaluate information applicability and credibility. (4) Amateur photographers face various information problems, such as information gaps, the concealment of professional techniques, inaccurate or unadaptable online information, and information overload. In response, they develop corresponding solutions, placing a relatively higher emphasis on verifying information through practical validation. (5) Amateur photographers' information behaviors are deeply shaped by serious leisure characteristics, with their "unique ethos" serving as the core criterion for information use and filtering.
The results of this study can serve as a valuable reference for libraries and information service institutions, photography platforms and equipment vendors, and photography training institutions. It is recommended that libraries and information service institutions enrich their collections with domestic and international photography books to cultivate the public's aesthetic sensibility, and lower the barriers to leisure participation through physical exhibitions, professional lectures, and equipment rental services. Photography information platforms and equipment vendors could develop secure, privacy-protected image management systems featuring AI automatic categorization, and offer transparent specifications alongside equipment trial and rental services. Photography training institutions should prioritize practice-oriented pedagogy. For future research, it is suggested to incorporate the "Serious Leisure Inventory and Measure (SLIM)" as a screening tool to quantitatively verify participants' leisure involvement. Future studies could also focus on specific photographic equipment (such as mobile photography or traditional photography) or themes (such as portrait photography or documentary photography) for in-depth comparative analysis, or expand the research scope to include professional photographers. Regarding research themes, the impact of Generative AI on information behaviors within serious leisure contexts can be further explored.
