民國六十六年十一月十九日，台灣省五項地方公職人員選舉接近尾聲之際，桃園縣的中壢市，不幸發生大規模的暴力事件；當時，作者適服役軍中，一再地反覆思索，深感此一問題的重要性，引發了暴力研究的興趣。進入研究所就讀後，因選修有關政治發展的課程，益愈覺得從政治發展的觀點出發，分析暴力的問題，必是一件相當有意義的工作，乃著手進行本研究。
本論文之主要研究目的，乃在於根據Huntington所陳述的理論，深入探討發展中國家暴力的相關問題；其分析架構如下：
第一章：導論。先探討當代暴力研究的理論與實際；並解析暴力的內涵；再分析社會變遷與暴力的關係；後敍述本論文的研究架構與策略。
第二章：政治參與與暴力。首先槪述政治參與的角色；並解析政治參與的內涵；再分析社會變遷與政治參與的關係；最後，比較分析政治參與與暴力的關係。
第三章：政治制度化與暴力。首先槪述政治制度化的角色；並解析政治制度化的內涵；再深討社會變遷與政治制度化的關係；最後，比較分析政治制度化與暴力的關係。
第四章：政治參與、政治制度化之差距與暴力。先敍述差距假設的意養；後比較分析政治參與、政治制度化之差距與暴力的關係。
第五章：結論。扼要敍述本論文的研究結果；並檢討缺失，提示未來研究的努力方向。
