As the catastrophic impacts of climate change gain increasing attention, news media play a pivotal role in shaping public engagement and behavioral intentions. Climate communication research has largely focused on science-based framing, emphasizing objective facts and advocacy, while more recent studies have examined the psychological effects of narrative framing (Nisbet et al., 2015). However, although moral appeals are frequently used in international environmental news to convey the urgency of climate change, their theoretical implications for behavioral intentions remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating whether news narratives grounded in different moral foundations produce distinct communicative effects.
Grounded in Moral Foundations Theory, this study focuses on two specific moral frames—Care and Fairness—and manipulates the geographical source of the news. Employing a 2 (Care vs. Fairness) × 2 (Taiwan vs. U.S.) online experimental design, this study investigates how these variables elicit climate anxiety and empathy among audiences, and subsequently influence information seeking, information avoidance, and attitudes.
The results indicate that, in environmental disaster news, care-based frames are more effective than fairness-based frames in eliciting climate anxiety and empathy. Climate anxiety increases information seeking and concern about climate change without prompting avoidance. Empathy, by contrast, enhances both seeking and avoidance, while also strengthening issue concern. Framing news as domestic or international does not significantly affect anxiety or empathy. Integrating Moral Foundations and Construal Level Theory, this study offers empirically grounded narrative strategies for climate communication.
