Since the launch of ChatGPT in late November 2022, generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI) has rapidly entered the public sphere and exerted widespread influence across fields such as education and the labor market. This study examines how Taiwanese news media have attended to and represented Generative AI, with a particular focus on differences among media outlets in terms of news topics, emotional language, news sources, and news framing.
Through content analysis and framing study, this study examines news coverage from ETtoday, Liberty Times Net, United Daily News, and Economic Daily News, with 988 articles selected through systematic sampling for analysis.
The findings reveal that Taiwanese media representations of Generative AI have gradually developed into a narrative characterized by both technological optimism and national orientation. Taiwan’s pivotal position in the semiconductor industry and the global AI supply chain has led media coverage of Generative AI to frequently connect the technology with Taiwan’s technological competitiveness, industrial advantages, and national development, thereby transforming technological issues into broader narratives imbued with national significance.
Overall, this study develops a risk–benefit framing scheme applicable to Taiwanese news coverage of Generative AI and demonstrates how emerging technologies are translated into media discourses.
