As of October 2025, adults aged 65 and above accounted for 19.9% of Taiwan’s population, marking its transition into a super-aged society. Supporting older adults in maintaining physical and mental health and enhancing social participation has therefore become an urgent concern. Since its launch in 2020, the Senior Fitness Club program promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare has served as an important setting for older adults to pursue health and quality of life, where information exchange, emotional support, and learning practices contribute to active ageing. Drawing on the Serious Leisure Perspective and the World Health Organization’s Active Ageing framework, this study interviewed fifteen adults aged 65 and above who regularly participate in the program to explore their information seeking, social support networks, and serious leisure characteristics, as well as how these factors jointly foster active ageing.
Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data on participants’ motivations, exercise experiences, information sources, and social interactions, supplemented by non-participant observations. Thematic analysis was conducted with reference to the six qualities of serious leisure and the three dimensions of active ageing. Findings indicate that motivations include health recovery, social connection, and routine continuation, and that long-term involvement nurtures active and diverse information-seeking behaviors. Serious leisure qualities such as effort, perseverance, and durable benefits enabled participants to accumulate knowledge, deepen information needs, and gradually shift from learners to sharers. Their emotional, instrumental, and informational support networks consolidated through ongoing interaction. The interplay between information seeking and social support enhanced health management, social engagement, and a sense of security, forming key mechanisms of active ageing.
From a serious leisure perspective, this study highlights the interconnectedness of information behavior, social support, and active ageing, and recommends that fitness centers strengthen individualized programs, social interaction, and safety measures; that libraries and information education units improve age-friendly health information services, literacy training, and intergenerational learning; and that governmental agencies advance cross-sector coordination, health information education, financial support, and certification to enhance accessibility for older adults.
