青年，在人生的過程中，是一個非常重要的階段，就國家民族來說，青年更是希望所寄。一個民族如果沒有勇於擔當的青年，以作為民族新生的主流，這個民族，必趨衰敗，最後將為時代所淘汰；反之，一國如其青年熱心參與，不遺餘力，則其國雖弱亦必變強，雖危亦必能安。為此，一般先進國家對青年的培育，無不十分重視，並以青年為其繼往開來，承先啓後的新生力量。而我國重視青年的程度，更是斑斑可考。我們偉大領袖總統 蔣公，一生視青年為子弟，愛護關切，無微不至。蔣公嘗說：「全國的青年就是我的生命，亦為我永生事業和歷史的寄託」。從這句話中，可以看出 蔣公對青年的期許，是如何的殷切！
當代中國青年運動，在世界青年運動的記錄中，具有獨特的風格和成就。翻開中國近代史，經辛亥革命到北伐，抗日到反共復國，中國青年無不擔當了重要的任務，而引導中國青年前進的，則是結合中華民族的傳統文化與西方民主科學思想的一個完美的「三民主義」，以及 國父與總統 蔣公的思想精神和偉大人格的感召。
民國三十八年，政府播遷台灣，國家正處於一個危疑震撼的大變局中。然而，歷經憂患約中國青年，不但沒有因此而氣餒，反而更加堅毅地屹立於反共最前線，繼續英勇奮鬪！
總統 蔣公衡察時代的需要，並適應青年的要求，於民國四十一年青年節，提出了組織「中國青年反共救國團」的歷史性號召，為中國青年第三次的大結合揭開了序幕，海內外青年聞風興起，熱烈響應，紛紛要求立即參加。至五月三十一日，行政院以台教字第二九五三號訓令頒佈了「中國青年反共救國團籌組原則」，經積極進行籌組，遂於是年十月三十一日正式成立。並以「為自由而戰的隊伍，所向無敵！」為題，發表宣言：「…熱愛祖國的青年朋友，起來！真理是我們的甲冑，正義是我們的武器，為自由而戰的隊伍所向無敵。在大時代的前面，在暴風雨當中，不能英勇地站起來，就要卑怯地倒下去」，充分表現這一代青年的氣概和擔當。
救國團創立的時代使命，是「團結愛國青年，完成中興大業」，為了實現此一目標，救國團的創辦人，蔣經國先生手訂了組團的原則：教育性、群眾性和戰鬪性。從革命聖火傳接的意義來說，是承接辛亥、北伐、抗戰一貫的革命事業，是中國青年另一次偉大的結合，另一次以愛國青年為主流的救國運動的開展，而蔣主任則為這一偉大的結合的領導。
著者所以要在前言中把這一段歷史加以強調，主要想表示，著者對於青年運動很有興趣，因此才著手研究「文革」時期，中共的青年學生。另一方面，為了保持整篇論文的客觀中立性質，著者在論文中，很少做價值判斷，即使有，也是根據事實，給予客觀的討論。但是，著者卻認為愛國與反共是中華民國每一份子的天職，因此必須在前言中，表示著者個人仍有價值判斷；同時強調中國青運始終和開國的偉人，及國家的命脈息息相關，以便讓國人讀者在未讀本文前，先有所了解，當閱讀本文之時，內心自有評價，遂會了解民主中國的可貴，與生而為祖國之青年之幸福。
本論文共分六章十六節，約十四萬字，在每一章的前言中，著者都將該章的各章內容，彼此的關係，及其大要做了簡略的介紹。因此，讀者在閱讀本文時，只需將各章前言閱讀，即可做一初步了解。而在第六章的第一節，著者在論及研究方法時，又進一步將各章的內容，做一整理及介紹。因此，在讀完本論文各章後，再閱讀第六章第一節，當會得到更進一步的了解。
