This study examines the 2024 Chinese television drama The Story of Rose, employing Self-Determination Theory (SDT) alongside feminist theory and qualitative media text analysis — placing motivational theory and gender theory in cross-disciplinary dialogue — to explore how the drama constructs contemporary female autonomy across two levels: how key female characters negotiate three basic psychological needs in critical life moments, and how the drama defines the boundaries of female autonomy through character configuration and gendered power dynamics.
The drama portrays self-worth not as linear growth but as a dynamic process of setbacks and integration. Huang Yimei experiences a thwarting of her autonomy needs in her first relationship, suppression of competence through the disciplinary discourse of domesticity in marriage, a rebuilding of agency after divorce, and deeper integration of relational needs through her encounter with and loss of Fu Jiaming. Through the juxtaposition of supporting female characters, the drama presents female autonomy as negotiated across multiple conditions.
Each character's autonomous practice is tied to her available resources, and gendered power operates quietly through everyday language of care. Ultimately, the drama grants female subjectivity visibility while reflecting a gender order that continues in subtler ways, positioning itself between structural critique and market-oriented storytelling.
