「哲學」與「政治」之間似乎存在著亙古亙今的爭執。古希臘的柏拉圖透過哲學家蘇格拉底遭到政治審判而被判處死刑的事件，將「哲學」與「政治」的爭執反映於早期對話錄作品。在《斐多》、《高爾吉亞斯》中，可以閱讀到哲學家無意涉入一般認為的政治活動，而選擇追求思辨的哲學人生。因此「哲學」與「政治」看似呈現出相互對立的關係。

然而，柏拉圖卻又在《理想國》第五卷中提出，若要消除城邦的惡，唯有使「哲學家成為國王，或國王成為哲學家」，意圖將政治權力與哲學合而為一。這不免令人感到困惑，究竟柏拉圖是如何理解「哲學」與「政治」間的關係。其次，「哲學家－王」的主張是否違背了理想城邦中一人不為二事之分工原則。

本論文試圖從柏拉圖對「技藝」的觀點切入，探討「哲學」與「政治」的關係，以及「哲學家－王」的身分如何能在柏拉圖的思想中獲得一致性，希望藉此解消批評者對「哲學家－王」主張的疑慮。透過《理想國》的「線喻」劃分作為關鍵文本證據，本文主張「哲學家－王」並非只是簡單的身分重疊，而是要求執政者須在「辯證」與「實踐」間，端視於所涉事物的性質差異，作出認知狀態的切換，方能使城邦的運作維持和諧與有序性。
