本文執筆之時，正值卡特總統宣佈與中共「建交」，內心沉重，莫可言宣！中美關係自尼克森以來，卽一直處於不穩定狀態，「中國問題」也爭論幾達三十年之久，如今已表面上告一段落。卡特的決定，固然令人扼腕，而囘顧一九六九年至一九七二年這段史實，尤倍增感槪！
本文定名為「尼克森重訂對華政策之研究」。全文共計五章，凡十節。第一章述本文撰寫的動機，與預備探討的一些問題。第二章就尼克森所採外交手腕，中共的現實考慮以及雙方和解的過程，來說明僵局是如何突破的。第三章從尼克森個性與作風，影響尼氏決策的因素背景，中共在尼克森全盤和平構想中的角色，來深入分析尼氏重訂對華政策的緣由與內涵。第四章以客觀批判的眼光來看尼克森對華政策的客觀問題，這些問題有的是自始存在，並不因尼氏推行新政策而得以解決的；有的是尼氏政策所引發，而至今猶無法克服的。第五章簡要回答首章所提問題，並對尼克森對華政策功過得失作一總評。
本文自構思、資料蒐集、撰寫至定稿付梓，曾面臨不少困難，幸賴張師京育悉心指導，乃能一一克服。令我感動的是張師在百忙中猶耐心地為我斟酌內容，多方教正，使若干錯誤得以避免。文中某些觀念和寫作方法，亦得力於外研所老師們平日的啟示與教誨。本文又承衛嘉定兄提供不少寶貴意見，謹此一併致謝。
感謝雙親多年來的培育教養，使我能專心學業。撰寫期間父親的指點與督導，母親以久病之身所賜予的鼓勵，尤使我在精神上得到無限地安慰與支持。
初次習作論文，疏漏欠妥之處，必定很多，尚研師長、同學不吝指正，藉補闕失，俾繼續探討，訂正增刪，期於來日。
