This study employs a bibliometric approach to examine relevant literature within the Scopus database regarding the "socio-economic impacts of university-industry collaboration in higher education." The primary objective is to analyze the knowledge base, research hotspots, and research frontiers of this field. To identify the knowledge base and current hotspots, VOSviewer was utilized to conduct citation analysis, co-citation analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis. Furthermore, CiteSpace was applied for burst detection analysis to effectively capture emerging research frontiers.
During the data collection phase, searches were executed using keywords related to higher education, university-industry collaboration, and socio-economic impacts. The inclusion criteria were strictly limited to peer-reviewed journal articles published in English up to the year 2025. Following screening process, a total of 2,352 documents were incorporated for final analysis.
The findings reveal that the knowledge base of this domain is primarily structured around five thematic clusters: "institutional transformation of universities and the triple helix theory," "academic entrepreneurship and individual behavior," "knowledge spillovers and regional economic geography," "technology transfer mechanisms and commercialization efficacy," and "open innovation and corporate absorptive capacity." Together, these elements constitute a knowledge framework centered on innovation systems, knowledge flows, and regional development.
In terms of research hotspots, the literature can be categorized into five major dimensions: "institutional frameworks and macro impacts," "technological practice and market commercialization," "the evolving role of universities and academic entrepreneurship," "knowledge flows and social responsibility," and "geographical diffusion and talent cultivation." Notably, technology transfer and academic entrepreneurship occupy the most central positions among these themes.
Finally, the research frontiers converge on three core propositions: "the development of innovation ecosystems and entrepreneurial orientation," "the transformation of university roles and the implementation of the third mission," and "focus on regional development and emerging economies." These themes reflect a contemporary, integrated research perspective that emphasizes building innovation ecosystems, co-creating social value, and advancing sustainable development.
