This study adopted a quantitative research design to inspect how five variables—communicative setting, social power, social distance, compliment topic, and compliment strategy influence sincerity judgments of compliments. Scenario-based questionnaires were used to simulate compliment events in interpersonal interaction. A total of 156 Taiwanese participants completed the online questionnaire. Participants evaluated the sincerity of compliments in each scenario using a five-point Likert scale. Statistical analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of the variables and their interaction effects on sincerity judgments. The results showed that compliment topic, compliment strategy, and social distance influenced sincerity evaluations. Compliments related to ability, skill, and performance were more likely to be perceived as sincere than those related to appearance or personality. Direct compliments also received higher sincerity ratings than indirect compliments. In addition, compliments with socially close relationships were more likely to be interpreted as sincere. In contrast, communicative setting and social power did not have significant main effects. However, interaction effects were found between communicative setting and social power, as well as between social power and compliment topic. The findings suggest that judgments of compliment sincerity are closely related to pragmatic inference, interpersonal familiarity, and contextual appropriateness rather than linguistic form alone.
