本研究針對報紙街頭運動的報導，來分析台灣大眾媒介與社會權力的關係，並以支配學派和自由多元學派的理論觀點加以探討，試圖瞭解:報紙有關街頭運動之新聞處理是否與新聞時期有關係?報紙有關街頭運動之新聞處理是否與新聞性質有關係?報紙有關街頭運動之新聞處理是否與事件特性有關係?

本研究以中央日報、中國時報及自立晚報的政治性、環保性街頭運動新聞為分析對象，並以66 年至77 年間所發生街頭運動中的445 則新聞為研究樣本，進行內容分析。

根據所得的資料，本研究發現，台灣報紙在報導街頭運動的新聞處理中，明顯偏向擁護權威和維持現狀。新聞時期、新聞性質及事件特性不同，新聞處理上都有顯著的差別。一般而言，政治解嚴以後，媒介自主性提昇和多樣化的表現，符合了多元學派對於媒介主動角色的觀點。而政治性新聞保守的立場始終比環保性新聞強。

總之，在新聞的事件處理上，大多傾向有利於政權統治勢力，並打擊破壞社會安定秩序者;在消息來源處理方面，以事件第三者及政府官員發言的機會最多，媒介似乎與社會權力存在著從屬關係。雖然在解嚴後報導上有開放的轉機，但媒介自主性仍受到某種程度的限制，反映出台灣報業是在霸權文化傳統下，尋求自由多元的一個體系。
