Numerous studies and empirical research confirm the existence of fat stigma and its highly gendered nature: women are expected to be thin, and fat women are therefore more likely to be devalued. Although many studies on the fatness examines labor, fashion, or public health, few studies investigate how this disadvantaged group—fat women in heterosexual intimacy—manages their romantic lives. Building on that gap, this study examines fat women’s experiences with dating apps, asking not only how they manage stigma but also how they use platform-based affordances to resist it. This resistance is not the familiar form of open rebellion but rather a series of tactics of “bricolage”—the weak using available resources within power structures.
After interviewing 13 fat women, the study finds that they are aware of fat stigma through a variety of past experiences. Most internalize this stigma and attempt to conform to mainstream norms through makeup, feminine clothing, or other slimming strategies. Specific moments in online space particularly trigger awareness for stigma. On the other hand, dating apps provide more opportunities to develop intimacy. Respondents not only passively perceive when and where to reveal their bodies, but also actively present other aspects of themselves as Dasein. When these affordances intersect with fat stigma and their agency, they create varied and meaningful ways of revealing. The use of apps themselves—and their staged, progressive interactional phases—also enable possibilities for intimacy that differ from face-to-face encounters.
The study further examines why women who are all categorized as fat nevertheless interpret similar behaviors differently. Some respondents, due to past experiences, reflect on their bodies and develop distinct mindsets and discourses to resist fat stigma—they recognize its existence but do not internalize it. Therefore, by situating respondents’actions within the temporal context of past experiences, present use, and future imaginations, this study re-argues that fatness as a stigmatized trait is socially constructed: it is so, but it does not have to be.
