A contest for influence can be observed in the Pacific. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition has intensified. The Pacific Island countries are increasingly caught between the actions of their traditional partners—Australia, New Zealand, and the United States—on one side, and China on the other. Threats facing Pacific nations are more likely to lead the Pacific Islands to hedge in their interactions with these powers rather than rely solely on any one of them.
