港英政府管治下發展起來的「香港人」身份跟現實中國息息相關的「中國人」身份如何磨合，備受關注。本研究共就77位分別出生於本地與內地、屬於不同年齡組別的香港市民進行深度訪談。結果發現本地市民的身份認同的多重性、動態性，反映靜態、單一的民意調查在捕捉身份認同上，以及「原生論」、「工具論」、「建構論」的解釋尚有補充空間。本研究歸納本地市民之中至少存在三種類型：「中國人認同導向型」、「香港人認同導向型」、「平衡型」。他們分別對於身份之間的關係、「融合」趨勢等在取態上呈現分歧。

本研究也發現在一般情境下，「中國人認同導向型」傾向突顯「中國人」身份，「香港人認同導向型」傾向突顯「香港人」身份。但是他們均可能在特殊情境觸發下分別突顯另一個身份：前者傾向在非政治方面突顯「香港人」身份；後者則在政治及非政治方面也有機會突顯「中國人」身份。另外，「中國人認同導向型」跟「香港人認同導向型」在政治事件、投票活動上表態較多呈現相反取向。「平衡型」則傾向在身份認同上較具彈性、較多務實考慮，不傾向於政治事件突顯其身份認同。

本研究結果反映視乎情境，個體的身份認同存在調整、切換的可能，而身份認同的意涵也並非一成不變。建議未來研究可以更多關注靜態指標之外的身份認同的多重性、動態性。

Considerable attention has been paid to the reconciliation between the “Hongkonger” identity, developed under British colonial governance and the “Chinese” identity, which is closely tied to the realities of China. This study conducted in-depth interviews with 77 Hong Kong citizens, born either in Hong Kong or the Mainland and spanning different age groups. The findings reveal the multiplicity and dynamism of Hong Kong citizens’ identities, showing that static, one-off public opinion polls for capturing identity as well as explanations based on primordialism, instrumentalism, and constructivism leave room for further elaboration. This study identifies at least three types among Hong Kong citizens:“Chinese-identity-oriented type”, “Hongkonger-identity oriented type” and “Balanced type”. They differ in their attitudes toward the relationship between identities, the trend of “integration”, and other related issues.

This study also finds that, in general situations, the “Chinese-identity-oriented type” tends to emphasize the “Chinese” identity, while the “Hongkonger-identity-oriented type” tends to emphasize the “Hongkonger” identity. However, in specific situations, the alternative identity becomes salient: the former is inclined to emphasize the “Hongkonger” identity in non-political domains while the latter type tends to emphasize the “Chinese” identity in both political and non-political domains. In addition, the “Chinese-identity-oriented type” and “Hongkonger-identity-oriented type” tend to take opposing positions in political events and voting activities. The “Balanced type” tends to be more flexible and pragmatic in its identity considerations, and is less likely to emphasize identity in political events.

These results show that, depending on the situation, individuals’ identities can be adjusted and shifted, and the meanings attached to identity are not fixed. Future research should pay closer attention to the multiplicity and dynamism of identity beyond static indicators.
