論文提要內容:
澳洲女作家克莉絲汀娜‧史黛德(Christina. Stead, 1902- 1983) 的長篇小說《愛孩子的男人》 (The Man Who Loved Children) 於1940年出版,這本書使她享有國際地位。本論文研究《愛孩子的男人》一書中有關於家庭、社會、文化等認同和自我呈現的問題;在研究方法上除了注重這部小說的細讀分析之外,也援用社會心理學和哲學方面的論述來彰顯史黛德的主要論點
由於國內對史黛德並不熟悉,本論文前言特地包括一些簡要的介紹並說明《愛孩子的男人》在世界文壇所代表的意義。史黛德這部.小說,是典型的家庭小說,但是史氏對家庭結構的剖析之精闢,可謂空前絕後。第二、三章探討在家庭結構中父親的權威形象如何塑造並限制了兒女的自我發展。本人持此強調文學性思維的重要性:史黛德顯然運用這種思維來呈現他的小說世界,也藉此烘托她筆下的人物對周遭世界的觀察。第四章進一步探討家庭中親屬關係和經濟、文化甚至於偶像崇拜的密切關聯,其用意在交代父母親所代表的文化權威對「自我」概念的影響。
第五章闡述史黛德的印象派手法;文中本人借用Arnheim 的"atonal art"這個名詞來析探《愛孩子的男人》一書藝術觀。本人的主要論點是:美的觀念和應用哲學的結合使人臻至一種獨特的創造性、藝術性想像,並突顯個人的靈視。事實上個人生命的意義以及主體性(subjectivity) 也因個人的靈視而得以彰顯。第六章結論延續前一章關於美和生命意義的論述並肯定史黛德文學性、藝術性、美學性的人生觀照,使她創造了一部小說鉅構。
