  • 本研究旨在探討董事會成員早年戒嚴經歷是否影響企業創新活動。本研究以2021年至2023年臺灣非金融類上市櫃公司為樣本,整合TEJ台灣經濟新報資料庫與臺灣轉型正義資料庫,以董事會成員於5至15歲期間所暴露之戒嚴環境強度建構公司層級之戒嚴經歷強度變數。本研究分別以申請專利筆數及研發費用率衡量企業創新產出及創新投入,並透過多元迴歸模型進行實證分析。實證結果顯示,在創新產出方面,董事會成員戒嚴經歷強度與企業專利產出之關係未達統計顯著水準,且在進行專利截尾偏誤調整後仍未獲得支持,此結果可能與樣本期間專利資料之截尾問題有關;在創新投入方面,戒嚴經歷強度與兩項研發費用率皆呈現顯著負向關係,顯示董事會成員早年所經歷之戒嚴環境強度愈高,企業後續研發投入愈低。本研究進一步分析發現,戒嚴經歷強度較高之企業不僅傾向降低研發投入,此一研發投入差異亦可能進一步反映於企業後續績效表現;此外,公司規模、企業年齡與董事會規模皆可能削弱戒嚴經歷強度對研發投入之負向影響。整體而言,本文發現董事會成員早年戒嚴經歷與企業創新投入存在顯著負向關聯,並從臺灣特殊歷史背景出發,提供威權統治環境可能透過企業決策者影響公司創新行為之實證證據。


    This study investigates whether board members’ early-life exposure to martial law affects corporate innovation. Using non-financial listed and over-the-counter firms in Taiwan from 2021 to 2023, this study integrates data from the Taiwan Economic Journal (TEJ) and the Taiwan Transitional Justice Database, and constructs a firm-level measure of board members’ martial law exposure intensity based on their exposure to Martial Law in Taiwan between the ages of 5 and 15. Corporate innovation output is measured by patent applications, while innovation input is measured by R&D intensity; the empirical analysis is conducted using multiple regression models. The results show that martial law exposure intensity is not significantly associated with patent output, even after adjusting for patent truncation bias, which may be related to the truncation problem in patent data during the sample period. However, martial law exposure intensity is significantly and negatively associated with both measures of R&D intensity, suggesting that firms with stronger board-level early-life martial law exposure tend to invest less in R&D. Further analyses show that this reduction may be reflected in subsequent firm performance, while firm size, firm age, and board size may mitigate the negative effect on R&D investment. Overall, this study shows that board members’ early-life exposure to an authoritarian environment is negatively associated with corporate innovation input, highlighting how historical institutional environments may shape corporate innovation through decision-makers.
