本文試圖從馬克思和韋伯的作品中釐清他們所理解的科學，以及這些觀點與現代科學觀的異同，同時，本文更試圖解釋他們對科學的理解「從何而來」。首先，在「文獻回顧」部分，本文約略回顧了各類以「比較馬克思和韋伯」為主題的文獻之歷史，從中可見，以「科學」這個主題來談馬克思與韋伯的差別仍有其意義。接下來，本文在「馬克思與韋伯的知識背景」章節中概述了馬克思和韋伯各自身處的外部環境對於他們的著作所造成的影響。而在正文部分，本文分析了馬克思和韋伯各自對科學的構想、處理了他們所構想的科學與現代科學的異同、並解析了馬克思和韋伯的「個人」與「社會」觀念。本文發現，馬克思與韋伯所理解的科學之所以存在差異，其實來自於他們看待人類與社會的觀點有所不同。雖然「社會是許多個人的共同活動」這一陳述馬克思和韋伯都會同意，但是他們對於其中概念的理解、以及所進行的推論卻各異其趣，也進一步使得他們對科學的構想具有截然不同的氣質。
