Grounded in the researcher’s self-reflection on long-term repetitive behaviors, this study critiques the mainstream pathologizing gaze that frames such practices as abnormal and reinterprets them from a functional perspective that emphasizes their positive roles in everyday life. The study proposes a dynamic behavioral spectrum comprising preference, habit, quirk, and ritual, conceptualizing these practices not as pathological symptoms but as adaptive psychological regulation mechanisms for coping with anxiety and cognitive load.
Drawing on Lundström and Poletti Lundström’s (2021) podcast ethnography framework, this study adopts a quasi-ethnographic design, using podcast-recorded interviews and repeated listening as the primary modes of field participation. This approach was necessitated by the time-bounded nature of the study and the mediated research field, which did not allow for long-term, site-based participant observation. Data were analyzed through reflexive listening, triangulating verbatim transcripts with salient sonic and paralinguistic cues.
Findings show that repetitive behaviors provide emotion regulation and attentional support and can be organized into five analytic dimensions—self-definition, functional operation, podcast-mediated effects, stigma negotiation, and narrative rewriting. Two motivational patterns emerged: a defensive–repair pattern (prevention-focused) activated under threat or disorder to restore psychological stability and relief, and a promotive–reward pattern (promotion-focused) pursued for pleasure and excitement as a post-task reward and encouragement.
