國族認同是文化與政治共同體的認同，其光譜流動且抽象，難以直接測量。然而，本研究基於新聞「馴化」（domestication）的理論發現新聞中「檔案」的使用可作為一項觀察指標。在本研究分析的臺灣、中國、美國的新聞文本中，都可發現「檔案」為媒體提供了詮釋歷史、召喚集體記憶的場域，將複雜、遙遠的歷史與外國事件轉化為國內受眾可以理解的日常論述，串聯過往的歷史事件與當下的政治議題。尤其1980 年代冷戰晚期以降，臺灣歷經解嚴與第三波民主化的變局，東亞經濟與政治亦深受世界局勢牽動。對兩岸而言，政權的主體性與執政的正當性已成為臺海最重要的議題之一，而檔案在新聞中的詮釋內容有助於一般大眾理解臺海權力關係與國族認同如何持續被拆解與重建。媒體對檔案內容的選擇、詮釋並賦予當代政治意義的過程，可反映其國族認同立場。本研究採用人工智慧與文字探勘工具發展一套兼採量化與質化的方法，對此一過程進行較系統化的觀察、分析與比較。以「檔案」為稜鏡，依序從宏觀主題結構推進至微觀選戰論述，探究 1995 年至 2024 年間，臺灣、中國與美國三地新聞媒體如何折射記憶政治的光譜。
本論文將「檔案—歷史—國族認同」一脈交織，聚焦三個層次：第一，臺灣、中國與美國報紙在檔案主題新聞中的主題結構有何差異；第二，檔案及其共現關鍵詞的意義結構，如何隨不同政治情境與媒介事件而變化；第三，在臺灣八次總統大選期間，兩岸媒體如何透過話語策略與短時間高密度的報導，將檔案的符號性價值用於國族認同動員的論述中。
在研究方法上，結合內容分析法與論述分析法，依美中臺國族認同的光譜，呈現大三角的架構，並據此進行多層次文本取樣，最終選取七家代表性報紙：臺灣的《聯合報》、《自由時報》、《中國時報》，中國的《人民日報》、《環球時報》，以及美國的《紐約時報》、《華盛頓郵報》。研究資料鎖定 1995 至 2024 年間與「檔案」、「臺灣」、「中國」相關的兩岸新聞，經布林邏輯檢索與人工篩選後，初步檢索得2,671筆，後經人工檢查，排除不符合「非現行文書」為定義的檔案後，得1,310筆。
為處理跨國家、長時距的新聞語料，本研究先以 Llama-3.3-70b-versatile 將英文報導統一翻譯為臺灣式中文，避免中英文斷詞標準差異可能造成的計算偏差，接著再以 GPT-4o API 建立專有名詞辭典進行權威控制，並使用 CKIP-Transformers 執行斷詞、詞性標記與實體辨識。主題聚類部分，本研究先分別對美中臺新聞文本進行 Gensim LDA 的聚類，發現三地在主題分布上呈現異中有同的情形，因此便接續將三地文本混合，對1,310筆檔案主題新聞進行整體的主題聚類分析，歸納出八大涉及三地歷史外交與今日政局的新聞主題。同時，本研究亦針對選戰期間的小樣本採 Mallet LDA 進行微觀主題聚類。關鍵詞擷取以 cTF-IDF 降低主題雜訊，人名網絡分析則結合 SpaCy 實體辨識與 NetworkX 中介中心性計算。總體採「先量化、後質化」的交叉比對策略，將宏觀主題分佈與微觀選戰論述相互校準，以詮釋檔案在兩岸新聞符號戰中的意識形態與媒體框架的建構過程。
以宏觀層次論之，這三十年來的檔案主題新聞可歸納為八大核心主題，包括蔣氏威權責任歸屬、帝國邊陲華人的身分認同、中國大外宣的雙面刃、民主轉型與祖國回歸、日本的戰爭責任、「兩個中國」的發展演變、美國與中國的外交正常化，以及亞洲戰場的情報與核武密謀。研究發現，檔案在新聞報導中具有高度的「可轉譯性」：三地媒體面對同一份史料，不僅涉及歷史真相的追尋，也依循各自的當代政治訴求，將檔案轉化為不同的記憶政治論述。本研究所分析的臺灣媒體傾向將檔案詮釋為向威權體制究責、確立臺灣主體性的證據；中國媒體則以檔案作為維護主權大一統與中共執政正統性的基石；美國媒體則多以回顧性的視角，將檔案作為檢視冷戰決策與制度化審視的工具。
在微觀層次，本研究發現在臺灣過往八次總統大選選戰年份，檔案主題新聞的數量相對較多，故選取選前一年至就職日的 309 筆兩岸新聞進行細部分析，結果發現檔案在選戰期間為議題的設定與媒介事件的形成提供了重要的論證基礎，使新聞得以連結進而動員人民既有的國族情感。從李登輝時期的交流與主權雙重變奏、陳水扁時期的母體聯繫與外交正統解構、馬英九時期的國家定位與大一統拉鋸、蔡英文時期的主權框架正面對抗與記憶法制化，到賴清德時期轉型正義下的詮釋焦慮與挪用，檔案的政治功能在時間中不斷位移，以《蔣介石日記》的意義轉變尤其顯示檔案的高度可塑性。
本研究以「檔案」為稜鏡，顯示新聞中檔案的運用可作為一項觀察國族認同的分析指標。經由對臺灣、中國與美國三地新聞的分析，本研究發現三地媒體在新聞中運用「檔案」明顯側重其符號價值，經由對檔案內容的選擇、詮釋與賦予當代意義的過程，將複雜難解、涉及國族認同的報導馴化為本國受眾可理解的認同論述。本研究更進一步指出，媒體所能發揮的場域不單是針對檔案的內容，檔案的解密與存在也是論述的主軸，根據分析選戰時期的新聞文本的結果，發現檔案的解密與存在可視為民主與威權兩種意識形態競逐歷史發言權的場域。這場國族認同意識形態的角力以兩岸為核心，且受美國亞太戰略布局與民主價值的影響，質言之，臺灣、中國與美國三地在檔案主題新聞中，彼此參照、相互定位，三地媒體援引檔案的目的不僅涉及對過去的還原，也經常被用來回應當下的政治需要，換言之，現實政治情境深刻影響了歷史被述說與記憶的方式，而「檔案」在其中作為稜鏡映射出國族認同的光譜，使難以測量的認同意向，有了可以被觀察、統計、比較的依據。臺灣是民主社會的實驗箱，介在中國的主權主張與美國主導的區域秩序之間，而自身主體性的建構又在其中持續深化，構成觀察當代國族認同的權力結構。本研究認為，環繞檔案的詮釋權之爭，在相當程度上確實可視為政權正當性競逐的一部分。

National identity is an identification with a cultural and political community. It is fluid, abstract, and difficult to measure directly. Drawing on the theory of news domestication, this study contends that the invocation of “archives” in the news can serve as an observable indicator of how national identity is articulated in news discourse. In the news texts from Taiwan, China, and the United States examined here, archives furnish a discursive arena for interpreting history and summoning collective memory. They translate complicated events, historical and foreign alike, into everyday discourse oriented toward domestic audiences, threading past events into present political contention. Since the waning years of the Cold War in the 1980s, Taiwan has passed through the lifting of martial law and the third wave of democratization. East Asia’s political economy, meanwhile, has been deeply shaped by shifts in the global order. Across the Taiwan Strait, the subjectivity of the polity and the legitimacy of governance have become central questions. News interpretations of archives offer interpretive frameworks through which domestic audiences may apprehend how cross-Strait power relations and national identity are repeatedly deconstructed and rebuilt. How the media select archival content, interpret it, and endow it with contemporary political meaning may reflect their underlying positions on national identity. To render that process systematically observable, analyzable, and comparable, this study develops a mixed quantitative–qualitative approach built on artificial intelligence and text-mining tools. Taking the archive as a prism, it moves from macro-level thematic structures to micro-level electoral discourse, examining how newspapers in Taiwan, China, and the United States refracted the spectrum of memory politics from 1995 to 2024.
Weaving archives, history, and national identity into a single inquiry, this dissertation asks three questions. How did the thematic structures of archives-themed news differ across the newspapers of Taiwan, China, and the United States? How did the semantic structures of “archives” and their co-occurring keywords shift with political circumstance and media events? And over Taiwan's eight presidential elections, how did the symbolic value of archives function as a resource for national-identity mobilization within the discursive strategies and short bursts of high-density coverage employed by newspapers on both sides of the Strait?
Methodologically, the study combines content analysis with discourse analysis. It is informed by the spectrum of national identity spanning the United States, China, and Taiwan, conceived here as a strategic triangle. On that basis it adopts a purposive, multi-level sampling design, selecting seven newspapers of recognized standing and influence: the United Daily News, Liberty Times, and China Times in Taiwan, the People’s Daily and Global Times in China, and the The New York Times and The Washington Post in the United States. The corpus comprises cross-strait news published between 1995 and 2024 concerning “archives,” “Taiwan,” and “China.” Boolean retrieval initially yielded 2,671 texts. Manual screening then excluded items falling outside the operational definition of archives as non-current records, retaining 1,310 texts for analysis.
Processing a cross-national, longitudinal corpus required several steps. The study first translated the English-language reports, using Llama-3.3-70b-versatile, into the written Chinese used in Taiwan, so as to reduce computational discrepancies arising from divergent Chinese and English word-segmentation conventions. A proper-noun dictionary constructed with the GPT-4o API was used for authority control. CKIP-Transformers carried out word segmentation, part-of-speech tagging, and named-entity recognition. For topic clustering, Gensim LDA was first applied separately to the Taiwanese, Chinese, and American subcorpora, revealing thematic distributions that converged in part while diverging in part. The three subcorpora were then merged, and clustering of the full 1,310 texts yielded eight major themes spanning the diplomatic histories and present-day politics of Taiwan, China, and the United States. Mallet LDA was further applied to the smaller election-period subsample for micro-level clustering. In keyword extraction, cTF-IDF tempered topical noise, and person-name network analysis coupled SpaCy entity recognition with NetworkX betweenness-centrality computation. Throughout, a “quantitative-first, qualitative-second” triangulation strategy cross-checked macro-level thematic distributions against micro-level electoral discourse, interpreting the ideological dimensions and framing processes through which archives operate in the cross-Strait symbolic contest.
At the macro level, three decades of archives-themed news can be grouped into eight core themes. These range from the attribution of responsibility for Chiang-era authoritarian rule, the identities of Chinese communities on imperial peripheries, and the double-edged sword of China's external propaganda, to democratic transition and return to the motherland, Japan’s war responsibility, the evolution of the “two Chinas” question, the normalization of U.S.–China diplomatic relations, and wartime intelligence and nuclear intrigues in Asian theaters. The findings suggest that archives possess a high degree of “translatability” in the news. Confronting comparable, at times identical, archival materials, the coverage examined went beyond the recounting of historical fact and converted archives into competing discourses of memory politics, each attuned to contemporary political concerns. Within the corpus, the Taiwanese newspapers tended to read archives as evidence for calling the authoritarian past to account and affirming Taiwan’s subjectivity. The Chinese newspapers, for the most part, enlisted them as a symbolic resource for upholding the grand unification of sovereignty and the governing legitimacy of the Chinese Communist Party. The American newspapers examined, with the benefit of hindsight, largely treated them as instruments of institutionalized scrutiny of Cold War decision-making.
At the micro level, archives-themed news proved comparatively concentrated around Taiwan's eight presidential elections. The study therefore selected 309 cross-Strait news items, published between the year preceding each election and inauguration day, for close analysis. The analysis indicates that, during the campaign period, archives supplied an evidentiary basis for agenda-setting and for the making of media events. They offered discursive resources through which existing national sentiment could be invoked and appeals to identity could be constructed. Across the eight campaigns, the political functions of archives shifted repeatedly. The emphasis moved from the double variations on exchange and sovereignty under Lee Teng-hui, to the motherland ties and the deconstruction of diplomatic orthodoxy under Chen Shui-bian, and to the tug-of-war between national positioning and grand unification under Ma Ying-jeou. It then turned to the frontal contest over sovereignty frames and the codification of memory under Tsai Ing-wen, and to the interpretive anxieties and appropriations of transitional justice under Lai Ching-te. Nowhere was this plasticity more evident than in the shifting significance of the “Chiang Kai-shek Diaries”.
Taking the archive as a prism, this study shows that the use of archives in the news can serve as an analytical indicator of how national identity is articulated in news discourse. Across Taiwan, China, and the United States, the newspapers examined tend to foreground the symbolic value of archives. By selecting archival content, interpreting it, and endowing it with contemporary meaning, they domesticate complicated, identity-laden stories into identity discourses oriented toward their domestic audiences. Nor is the contest confined to what the archives say. The declassification, and the very existence, of archives likewise constitute central axes of discourse. The election-period evidence suggests that the discourse surrounding declassification and existence may be viewed as an arena in which democratic and authoritarian ideologies vie for the authority to speak for history. This contest centers on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, yet remains embedded in the United States’ Asia-Pacific strategic posture and its democratic commitments. In archives-themed news, the newspapers of Taiwan, China, and the United States repeatedly reference and position one another. Across the corpus, moreover, the invocation of archives serves not merely to reconstruct the past. It often carries the discursive function of responding to the political needs of the present. Contemporary political circumstances, in other words, profoundly shape how history is narrated and framed for remembrance in the news. In that process, the archive stands as an enduring prism. It refracts the spectrum of national identity as articulated in news discourse, providing a theoretically grounded, systematically observable, and cross-temporally comparable discursive window through which these otherwise elusive articulations of identity can be observed, quantified, and compared. Situated between China’s sovereignty claims and the U.S.-led regional order, Taiwan is a democratic society in which discourses of its own subjectivity figure prominently over the period examined. It serves in this study as a key site for observing the power structures that surround contemporary national identity. The struggle over the right to interpret archives, this study concludes, may, to a considerable extent, be understood as part of the broader contest over regime legitimacy.
