  • ABSTRACT

The publication of Brideshead Revisited in 1945

dismayed or infuriated those critics who had been pleased

with Evelyn Waugh's early comic novels. It seems that

Waugh's apparent obsession with the upper class and

Catholicism is horrible, repellent and unpardonable.

Although Evelyn Waugh emphasizes that the theme of

Brideshead Revisited is theological, the narrative reveals

quite the opposite. The genuine concern of this book is

the mundane affairs. The purpose of this thesis is to

prove that the memory of the earthly affairs holds sway

    over that of holy matters.

It is also the aim of the ,thesis to explore the

ambivalence of emotions through the ambiguous narrative.

The sacred and profane memories of Captain Charles Ryder

are not exclusively divided; rather, they criticize and

counterbalance each other. As a result, the work implies

no wholehearted embrace of any value.
