This study employs a Spatial Autoregressive Model with Fixed Effects (SAR-FE) on panel data from 20 Taiwanese counties and cities (2014–2022) to explore the profound impacts of macroeconomic conditions, labor structures, and spatial environments on spousal life satisfaction in dual-earner families.
Empirical findings reveal four structural characteristics: First, a significantly negative spatial autoregressive coefficient (ρ) confirms the "positional good" and "spatial rivalry" attributes of psychological well-being, where urban core growth induces relative deprivation in neighboring areas. Second, validating the Easterlin Paradox, real income lacks a significant boosting effect. Furthermore, pursuing larger housing traps wage earners in a "housing spatial shackle" characterized by financial strain and exhausting commutes. Third, aggregate unemployment negatively impacts families, indicating that macro-labor risks seamlessly erode household psychological security. Fourth, the economic gains of female employment are offset by a "work-family double burden," with current market and public "defamilialization" mechanisms failing to provide an effective buffer.
Accordingly, we recommend advancing collaborative governance for "cross-regional living circles," shifting policies from monetary subsidies to tangible public care infrastructure. We also urge enterprises to integrate "family-friendly" initiatives into ESG strategies. Coupled with housing decommodification and jobs-housing balance, these measures can effectively help dual-earner families break free from dual spatial-economic shackles.
