本研究採用一般新聞正確性研究方式，利用新聞來源評鑑與記者反應的對證，以中央日報、台灣新生報、聯合報、中國時報、大華晚報的一八四則科學新聞做為研究樣本，分別訪問了一○八位科學家、廿六位記者。希望從他們的意見中，對我國報紙的科學新聞，有一概況性的了解。
本研究發現；我國報紙科學報導錯誤率是74.5%，發生錯誤最多的是物理、農業、海洋等內容較艱澀的新聞。就所犯錯誤類別言，主觀性錯誤多於客觀性錯誤。
記者的背景知識不夠，誇大、主觀作風，和消息、來源接觸太少，編輯及報社負責人的偏好及限制，以及科學家不夠合作，是發生錯誤報導的幾個主要因素。
本研究曾針對這些問題，分別從記者、編輯、科學家、新聞教育諸方面，提出十五項建議。
目前在國內，本篇論文可以說是第一個利用科學方法，有系統地分析一些事實發現，有心人士可以根據這些發現，對我國報紙的科學報導做進一步的探究。
