This dissertation examines the social practices of Muslim students in relation to their decision to attend a Catholic university in Indonesia, within the context of higher education and inter-religious relationships, using a critical ethnographic method. The ethnographic data were collected from Muslim students, Catholic students, faculty members, and the Father Campus at a Catholic university in Surabaya City, Indonesia. The discussion began with an explanation of the model of a Catholic university that fosters interfaith relationships within the institution. This symbolic order in a Catholic university does not function to convert individuals; instead, it allows Muslim students to utilize their practical sense to participate comfortably in daily activities. The next discussion is about the social practices of Muslim students. The internalized dispositions of Muslim students are shaped by their family, schooling, religious, and social backgrounds, as they interact with their various capitals within the educational field. Their ability to mobilize different forms of capital enables them to enter and navigate a field where denominational identity differs, transforming what might be seen as a constraint into a strategic opportunity. Furthermore, the practices at a Catholic university show how religious coexistence is shaped by institutional power. By allowing Muslim students to pray, serve Ramadan, and gather for iftar, the university authorizes certain forms of interfaith life. Moreover, through public gestures like holiday greetings, interfaith events, and symbolic representation, WMSCU positions itself within a broader field of power in Indonesia. This complexity gives rise to a form of interfaith mutualism symbiosis in higher education institutions that goes hand in hand with the urgency of religious moderation in Indonesia.
