Among the four core language skills, speaking is often considered the most challenging for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners to master. In Taiwan’s secondary schools, however, speaking remains underemphasized in classroom instruction, with greater focus placed on reading, grammar, and writing. This imbalance becomes especially problematic in demanding communicative contexts such as college admission interviews, where students are expected to deliver spontaneous, structured, and professional oral responses, skills that receive limited instructional attention in the existing curriculum. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly tools like ChatGPT, offer new possibilities for enhancing learners’ speaking proficiency by providing real-time feedback, personalized support, and interactive dialogues. Despite the growing availability of AI-powered language tools, empirical research on their effectiveness in preparing students for authentic, consequential speaking tasks remains limited. The present study addresses this gap by exploring how instructor-guided use of ChatGPT supported seven 12th-grade Taiwanese EFL students in developing their English speaking skills for college admission interviews and by examining their perceptions of using it as a practice tool.
Seven students from a public high school in southern Taiwan participated in a 12-session English interview training program that integrated ChatGPT into guided speaking practice. The study adopted a mixed-methods case study design. Pre- and post-intervention speaking assessments, modeled after authentic college admission interviews, were conducted to evaluate students’ oral performance across four dimensions: fluency and coherence, content relevance and development, grammatical and lexical accuracy, and pronunciation. Follow-up semi-structured individual interviews and a questionnaire were also administered to explore students’ experiences and attitudes toward using ChatGPT. Findings from both quantitative and qualitative analyses suggest that students appeared to show notable improvement in speaking performance, particularly in content development and fluency. While students found ChatGPT helpful for rehearsing responses and refining content, they also noted certain limitations, such as the absence of nonverbal cues (e.g. eye contact, body language, etc.) and the lack of authentic human interaction. These findings offer practical implications for integrating AI-powered tools into EFL speaking instruction, especially in preparation for formal oral assessments.
