體系理論是一非常複雜及精細的槪念，此槪念本根源於自然科學，對於在社會科學裹，過份支離破碎及強調瑣碎細節的研究方法而言，體系研究途徑也提供了一個較一致性及較廣泛性的論點，不但對過去所忽視的問題開創了新的研究途徑，也為社會科學的研究方法奠定了基礎。
第二次世界大戰結束以後，以美國為主的政治學界將「體系分析」引用到政治現象的考察上，為現代政治學研究開創了一項嶄新的研究方法後，作為政治學分支的國際政治，也在多位學者的倡導下，逐漸將此方法連用於國際政治的分析上，塑造了國際體系（International System）的諸種理論。
對於這種新研究法的引入，國際政治學者們的批評與爭論極為分岐，而體系研究途徑本身亦有其缺陷，但是總而言之，它對國際政治提供了新的看法及方法，也擴大了研究範圍。雖然目前的發展距離「理論建構」尚遠，然却可視為一種新的槪念架構，研究體系之學者所提出之模式，亦可嚐試作為研究國際現象的一種工具，俾了解某些國際政治體系中若干特性行為。
本文卽在此種信念下，嚐試用這個角度研究當代國際體系――亦卽第二次世界大戰後迄今的國際社會。要觀察此龐大而複雜的體系，變數的選擇實為最困難的工作。在此衆多變數中，本文僅挑選角色性質變數、角色互動變數、資源分配變數、角色目標變數來觀察整個當代國際社會。
本文共分五章敍述，第一章序論，共分三節，主要介紹體系研究途徑在國際政治中的觀念及運用。第二章分析國際體系角色分類變數；首先介紹槪況、次以經濟指標及政治指標觀察當代體系角色的性質。第三章分析體系角色互動變數；除介紹角色互動的大環境外，主要係分析當代體系角色互動的主要形式。在互動的三種形式——衝突、競爭及合作中，將依次以當代國際社會的互動特徵分析之。第四章則介紹當代國際體系的結構，此章用資源分配變數及目標分配變數二個角度觀察結構的特性。第五章則為結論。
筆者不憚學淺，以「當代國際體系」作為研究目標，主要動機是嚐試以新的角度觀察國際政治現象，不週之處自當甚多，幸賴論文指導教授張師京育之細心指點，終能突破重重困難，特在此致最誠摯的謝意。另雙親、遠在異邦的外子壽來、五妹儀之、及其他諸姊妹，對本文之完成均給予最大的支持與協助，親恩浩瀚，無以囘報，僅能銘記心底並藉此角聊表內心無盡的謝意。
