Digital games have increasingly become important venues for social interaction and entertainment. However, while seeking positive entertainment experiences, players often encounter prevalent flaming behaviors within gaming communities, leading to negative impacts and the deterioration of their gaming experience and emotions. Although prior research has identified a vicious cycle where victims of toxic behavior in games transform into perpetrators, the underlying psychological mechanisms driving this transformation remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the psychological mechanisms through which online game players transition from victims to perpetrators of flaming. The research focuses on the impact of flaming victimization on flaming behavior, incorporating angry rumination and moral disengagement as cognitive-psychological mediators. Additionally, it examines whether the moderating effect of dispositional mindfulness can interrupt this vicious cycle. Employing an online survey methodology and integrating players' shared experiences to clarify coping strategies and emotional responses, this study collected 310 valid responses.
The results indicate that flaming victimization has a significant positive effect on flaming behavior. Furthermore, victimization positively influences flaming behavior through the mediation of moral disengagement. Angry rumination also mediates the relationship between flaming victimization and flaming behavior; however, this mediating effect is significant only among players with low levels of dispositional mindfulness. Moreover, higher levels of dispositional mindfulness were found to buffer the mediating effect of angry rumination. Contrary to the research hypotheses, higher levels of dispositional mindfulness did not significantly buffer the direct effects of flaming victimization or moral disengagement on flaming behavior, nor did it significantly moderate the mediating effect of moral disengagement.
