  • In St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), many businesses are experiencing growing portfolio of NPLs and The General Empowerment Co-operative Credit Union (G.E.C.C.U.) is not exempted. This study revealed that G.E.C.C.U. has an accelerating trend of incidence of non-performing loans (NPLs). The findings also revealed that the business sector in SVG has the most prevalent incidence of NPLs. Further, results showed that credit appraisal techniques, inadequate monitoring, business failure, poor weather conditions, unfavourable interest rate, and wilful default among others are factors accounting for the problem of NPLs at G.E.C.C.U. However, credit appraisal techniques, inadequate monitoring and business failures deemed the three major factors for such growing problem at the credit union.
The study therefore focuses on examining G.E.C.C.U.’s credit underwriting processes and the supervision of loan accounts to determine causes of, and combat its NPLs. Additionally, the study is specifically geared towards ascertaining the trend of incidence of NPLs, the sector(s) with the highest incidence of NPLs, identifying factors contributing to the incidence of NPLs, evaluating the credit underwriting processes and supervision of loan accounts at G.E.C.C.U., while, endorsing implementable strategies and solutions to mitigate NPLs.
The study evidently showed that the growing problem of NPLs at G.E.C.C.U. was as a result of poor credit underwriting processes and inadequate supervision of loan accounts, however, the state of the economy, such as business failures, are prime factors of non-performing loans.
