This study aimed to examine the impact of listening to music at work on job performance and to analyze the mediating roles of learning and vitality, as well as the moderating effect of environmental noise. A total of 482 valid responses were collected through a questionnaire survey, among which 357 participants who reported having the habit of listening to music at work were used for the main analysis. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and mediation analysis were employed to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that the duration of music listening during work was significantly and positively related to job performance, and this relationship was partially mediated by employees' learning and vitality. In addition, environmental noise significantly moderated the relationships between music listening and both job performance and vitality, suggesting that music can buffer external distractions and help maintain psychological energy in noisy environments. Overall, listening to music at work was found to improve employees’ performance and psychological states. Moreover, among employees who did not usually listen to music, the majority indicated a willingness to do so if the work environment allowed it. Based on these findings, this study recommends that organizations foster a “music-friendly” workplace environment to promote concentration, vitality, and well-being.
