In the next 10 years, we will see true self-driving cars on the road, and expect to see less and less traffic accidents. Before then, however, the automotive industry has to overcome many challenges such as infrastructure and information safety concerns. Furthermore, the legal responsibility of accidents must be clarified and codified.
Currently, self-driving cars equipped with Li-DAR can only see the outside environment and lack the ability to communicate with other vehicles and external environment. V2V and V2I communications will enable self-driving cars to communicate with other vehicles and infrastructure. The self-driving cars will reach Level 5 autonomy with V2V and V2I technology. The U.S. government is preparing to pass laws of using the V2V in the production of new cars. This means the V2V and V2I communication will be the industry standard for vehicles in the future. Furthermore, the supply chain of V2V and V2I communication will also play an important role in the development of self-driving cars industry. There are two different mainstream formats: DSRC and LTE-V; both of which formed alliances with automotive companies to compete with each other. It may become a format war such as VHS versus Betamax in the early stage of video development. The winner of the format war will take all the market share and lead the standardization of V2V and V2I communication.
