Although Ronald Reagan and Han Feizi differ significantly in their approaches to legitimacy and leadership, they nonetheless display certain parallels, especially with regard to delegation and leader distance. These similarities likely stem from comparable structural problems of leadership faced by both Reagan and a Han Feizian ruler in the governance of complex political organizations. Their differences, meanwhile, arise from the distinct legitimacy requirements each had to address. This thesis reconstructs those requirements and traces their effects on the political practices employed by the two. The analysis shows that, although Reagan and a Han Feizian ruler made use of certain similar political techniques, these techniques differed in their underlying logic, worldview, and political meaning. The implications of the comparison are twofold: first, legitimacy is not a fixed property but a relational process; second, political practices and phenomena can acquire different meanings depending on the legitimacy context, including the relevant audience, its expectations, and the surrounding institutional and structural conditions.
