This paper aims to examine whether the decision of a supplier firm’s facilities to be co-located with its supply chain partners brings positive effects to the supplier firm's innovation performance, and how the geographic spillover resulted from the co-location decision moderates this relation. Take the U.S. as an example. Using pooled regressions, we collect data from 837 US-based technology-intensive firms (which give us 1,335 supplier-buyer pairs), classify these firms into four industry categories, and analyze their innovation performance from 1989 to 2017. Our empirical results show that co-location for some industries indeed are positive associated with the innovation performance of supplier firms. However, geographic spillover in the co-located areas also moderates the benefits of co-location differently depending on the supplier's industry.
