本研究的目的是企圖了解守門人—記者，如何進行工作？在他的作決策時，可能與那些因素有關？研究的重點在探討認知形式與記者報導新聞的關係。認知形式以場地獨立性或場地依賴性；以及信念系統開放性或封閉性為範圍。
研究對象是台北市三家日報—中央、中國、聯合及三家晚報—大華、民族、自立的記者，首先給記者施以認知形式的心理測驗，然後又以問卷方式，訪問記者對十五則不同類新聞的新聞角度的選擇情形。
研究結果發現：
一、記者對於新聞角度不論就「個人喜好」的觀點或就「新聞重點」的觀點作選擇，都確有差異存在。對於同一新聞，記者所認為的新聞重點不一樣，所喜歡報導的角度也不一樣。
二、記者的性別、新聞教育背景、工作興趣都不是造成選擇新聞角度差異的可能因素。
三、與新聞角度的選擇偏向有關的是認知形式的場地依賴性，愈是場地依賴的人，對新聞角度的選擇會偏向描述性。場地依賴性對其變異的解釋力達百分之十二。
四、工作經驗的長短也與新聞角度的偏向有關，工作經驗愈長，對新聞角度的選擇愈少偏向人物方面。不過工作經驗長短對其變異的解釋力只達百分之四•六。
