This study examines the fandom of the British-Irish boy band One Direction, whose fans are known as Directioner, through the theoretical lens of James W. Carey’s ritual view of communication. It explores how fans continue to sustain their emotional connection to the band and their identity as Directioner through everyday media practices, affective memories, and social media interactions after One Direction entered an indefinite hiatus in 2016, followed by a prolonged absence of new official group content. While most previous studies on idol fandom have focused on textual production, media representation, and fan consumption during a band’s active period, this study shifts attention to how the fandom continues to preserve, re-narrate, and reproduce affective experiences related to the band after official content production has slowed down and new collective texts are no longer produced.
The findings show that the hiatus did not bring the relationship between One Direction and their fandom to an end. Instead, the hiatus created a sense of an unfinished story, in which waiting and anticipation for a possible reunion became important foundations for sustaining the fandom’s emotional attachment to the band. By replaying old songs and videos, marking anniversaries, and celebrating members’ birthdays, fans transform past group texts into affective rituals embedded in everyday life.
Furthermore, social media has played a central role in keeping the One Direction fandom active after the hiatus. Through likes, reposts, comments, hashtags, and nostalgic posts, fans continue to bring shared memories of the band back into circulation. These practices are not simply expressions of nostalgia; they also allow fans to keep the band emotionally present in their everyday lives. Meanwhile, the members’ solo careers also offered fans another way to remain connected to the band. By supporting the members’ individual music and entertainment projects, fans carry their love for One Direction into the members’ separate careers, allowing the memory of the band to continue rather than be replaced.
